When we hear the word “mission” we often think of the work missionaries do overseas. This is vital work and, following Jesus’s direction, we should be engaged globally in mission. However, some of the assumption behind that model is that our own country is Christian. It isn’t. Our own neighbourhoods need the light of Christ too. So mission is both local and global. But the model can also point us to a social reality. Our mission is to those most like us to those least like us. If we are doing that in our neighbourhoods who would we be extending the kingdom to?
